Labor is a natural process. Here's what to expect during the three stages of labor and birth — and what you can do to promote comfort.
STAGE 1:
Early labor- One of the longest parts of labor, contractions are usually mild and 5-7 minutes apart while lasting for about 30 seconds.
TRY: Going for a walk, breathing or relaxation techniques, pack a hospital bag.
Active labor- Contractions are more intense and are around 3-5 minutes apart, they last about 60 seconds long.
TRY: Roll on a large birthing ball, have a gentle massage between contractions, take a walk, stopping to breathe through contractions.
STAGE 2:
The birth of your baby- At this point, contractions may space out again and most women feel more relieved at this point.
STAGE 3:
Delivery of the placenta- You'll continue to have mild, less painful contractions that are close together. The contractions help move the placenta into the birth canal. You'll be asked to push gently one more time to deliver the placenta.
