Polycystic Ovary Syndrome (PCOS) is a condition that affects many women of reproductive age. It is a hormonal disorder caused by an imbalance of reproductive hormones, which can lead to various symptoms. There are four different types of PCOS, each with specific symptoms.
1. The most common type is Insulin Resistant PCOS (IR), which affects around 70% of women with PCOS. Insulin resistance occurs when the body becomes less sensitive to insulin, which can lead to high levels of insulin in the blood. This can cause symptoms such as hormonal acne, irregular periods, excessive hair growth on the face, back, and chest, and weight gain.
2. Inflammatory PCOS is another type that can cause various symptoms such as digestive issues like IBS (irritable bowel syndrome), unexplained fatigue, headaches, joint pain, skin conditions, and food sensitivities. This type of PCOS is often related to chronic inflammation in the body, which can affect the immune system and lead to these symptoms.
3. Adrenal PCOS is a less common type and accounts for only 10% of women with PCOS. This type is often similar to Insulin Resistant PCOS in terms of symptoms, but it is caused by an overproduction of androgens (male hormones) by the adrenal glands. This can lead to symptoms such as acne, irregular periods, and excessive hair growth.
4. Post-pill PCOS is a temporary type that can occur after stopping birth control pills. When you stop taking birth control pills, your body experiences a temporary fluctuation in hormones, which can cause a surge in androgens. This temporary surge in androgens is enough to qualify for a PCOS diagnosis. Symptoms of Post-pill PCOS can include irregular periods, acne, and excessive hair growth.
It is essential to recognize the different types of PCOS, as each type requires different treatments. If you suspect that you have PCOS, it is crucial to speak to a medical professional who can help diagnose your condition and create an appropriate treatment plan.
